The upper level of the Gates Chili library was 'standing room only' on Wednesday morning as family, friends and classmates joined senior Marcus McGill to celebrate the signing of his 'letter of intent' to play Division I football at University of Buffalo beginning this fall.

A two-time AGR selection in football, McGill chose the Bulls over Syracuse and Rutgers, among others. Upon his visit to UB he knew right away that it was the place for him. He will compete for playing time at the wide receiver position right away, and his 6'1”, 190 pound frame paired with his willingness to run routes across the middle of the field will make him a reliable target for the Bulls.

“Marcus has worked extremely hard to get to where he is today,” said Gates Chili head coach Jason Benham. “Was given a gift athletically and he has made the most of it, with much more left to come.”

McGill indeed understands the opportunity he has earned and what it means for his future. While he strives to achieve his ultimate goal of playing in the NFL, he also knows his education will provide happiness for him and his family.

“I am really thankful for this opportunity,” said a smiling McGill shortly after the ceremony in the library. “Not many people have the chance to receive a free education, so for me and my family that is the best part.”

On the field, McGill knows he will have to work harder than ever now that he will be playing at the college level. The opponents he will face will be bigger, stronger and faster than anyone he faced in high school and everything must be earned.

“Today was just a great day for me and my family,” continued McGill. “I am ready to work hard and I know either way at the end of my time in college I will be able to provide for them.”
As the third player in the last three years to graduate from Gates Chili and play Division I football, McGill will do his best to make his school and family proud at the next level.
